Who hasn’t stared enviously at those beautiful smokey eyes on the covers of glossy bridal magazines? It’s an amazing look, but a very difficult one to copy without the right guidance. The following guide will take the stress out of the process, taking you step-by-step through the secrets of the stunning smokey eye look.
What is it about this look that works so well? The biggest factor is the careful, subtle blending from light colors into dark. One common misstep is to use dark browns and black, neither of which is necessary. Alternatively, consider:
A peach base with a green hue.
A gold brown, champagne or deep purple bases with a bright blue hue.
To properly move forward, you will require:
Two Eye Shadows – (one lighter, one darker)
Start by applying the lighter eyeshadow shade (or mineral concealer) to the under-eye area, then all across the top eyelid. (Avoid any oil products on your eyelids, as they run the risk of melting.)
Depending on your eye shadow color, you will be able to line your eyes with blue, purple or deep green eyeliner. (If you have decided to use grey, brown or standard black, you can apply the same liner color by drawing lines a little more thickly toward the middle of the eye.)
With the upper eyelid done, it’s time to work on the bottom eyelashes. The secret: simply use an eyeliner pencil, then smudge it by gliding your finger over the top. Once this is done, add a light, shimmering eye shadow and blend it into the existing darker color.
This step can be daunting to some but rest assured this is not fine art, and a little practice will go a long way!
Use an eye shadow brush to blend in the darker color from your eyelash line. (You could also use a q-tip cotton bud, smudge brush or sponge-tip applicator to smudge directly over the penciled area.)
With this done, the final stage is to curl your eyelashes, then add several coatings of mascara to really enhance the look. As an added bonus, try applying a natural shade of blush to your cheeks, adding color to your complexion to counter the darker eyes and help your natural, radiant beauty.
All done. You are now set to walk down the aisle with those adorable smokey eyes!
